Hm, ok! Ich poste sie mal!
Reasons why we love Aragorn and Eowyn
1) They have chemistry (as does Viggo and Miranda)
2) She saw him when he was just a ranger.
3) He saw her pain and loneliness.
4) Tolkien had them together originally
5) Even Viggo thinks they're better
6) Because he thinks she's a shieldmaiden of Rohan
7) She calls him 'My Lord'
8) He calls her 'My Lady'
9) Because he was into the hug as much as she was.
10) Because we saw that sly look he gave her during the Gandalf mojo scene.
11) You could cut the sexual tension with a knife in that cup scene.
12) Because together they could 'bloody change this' (in Miranda's words)
13) Those A/E scenes are ZINGING. Even Liv jokingly called Aragorn a 'cheating bastard'! She saw it too.
14) Because of her we have seen his true smile.
15) Because he ate her stew and lied that it was good.
16) Because he told her how old he was.
17) Because he can confide in her
18) Because she would fight beside him
19) Because she loved him as a ranger.
20) And if he was'nt King. She'd still love him.
21) And if she could'nt have him ... She'd fight for him and marry him anyway. *coughsunlikesomeoneelse*
22)Because he grabbed her the moment he was in range of her! (see TTT)
23)He just can't keep his hands off her. (note to fellow F/Sers for ROTK EE or see trailers and promo pictures)
24)Because those stares last a longer than 3 seconds.
25)Because even though she does'nt like doing the women's job. She loves him enough to cook for him.
26) And he'll eat it and say it's delicous even though she can't cook.
27) Because she's happier when he's around.
28) Because she introduced him to Brego!
29)Because he understands her.
30) Because she would'nt make him wait 60 years!
31) Teh elf elornd had a dauter called AWREN adn she wuz sevral thousend years older than aragron BUT she fell in LUV <33333333333 w/ him N-E-way as soon as she saw him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 OMG WTF LOL
32) Because we saw that look during the coronation
33) Because no matter how it ended. We still see it!
34) Because married men CHEAT!
35) When he kissed Arwen at the end he was thinking of Eowyn and taking out all his repression on her!
36) Because even the film critics can't believe he choose vacant Arwen over lovely soulful Eowyn. read film review.
37) The A/E scenes in ROTK demonstrated so much more romance and lustful glances than they had to be cut.
38) Because we have visual evidence!!!
39) Because they have their own stamp together
Und hier noch der Text warum ich Arwen nicht so mag!
My Problem with Arwen
To those who know me, it's no big secret that I don't like Arwen. But only one or two people really know why. My dislike of her goes far beyond the fact that I'm fond of Aragorn/Eowyn - after all, I love Faramir, and I love the idea of him being with Eowyn. Do I dislike her because she chooses to remain at home, while Eowyn plays a more forward, "modern" role? No. Nor is my dislike due to the fact that Tolkien didn't write much about her; my dislike is based on what he did write. Naturally, people will disagree with these opinions, and there's a link at the bottom to go to this thread on the forum and rake me over the coals, if you so desire. ;-) So without further ado, I'll go through a few passages and explain my problem with Arwen.
To put it most directly, I find Arwen very cold and selfish. This may sound like a strange thing to say about someone who gives up her immortality for love, unless one considers that in more than one place, Tolkien stresses that mortality was a gift granted to men, and that many elves longed for it. Perhaps especially a bored elven princess who had lived a sheltered life for thousands of years? A daughter who has seen the pain of her father's long life, because he chose to be immortal? That's very debatable, and perhaps Arwen was completely unselfish in her decision to give up her life for Aragorn. Unfortunately, this is only a side issue in my dislike of her.
Knowing that her time will now be limited, Arwen still chooses to make Aragorn wait decades for her. Not five or ten years, mind you. Sixty years. Why does she waste so much time? Certainly her father wanted her to wait until Aragorn was king, but I think Arwen wanted this too. Otherwise, she could have been with Aragorn as long as she wanted to. Arwen's willingness to die for Aragorn was conditional - he had to be a king to deserve her.
Luthien found herself in basically the same situation as Arwen did. She loved a mortal, and her father forbade the match. Did Luthien sit idly by, then, and wait for Beren to deserve her? No. She set out on her own to help him in his quest, even confronting Sauron himself. Luthien's love for Beren was unconditional, her desire to be with him more important than whatever position he held in life.
Moving on from those more general things, here are some passages that also, to me, suggest Arwen's coldness and selfishness.
When the feast was over, those who were to go took leave of King Eomer. Aragorn and his knights, and the people of Lorien and of Rivendell, made ready to ride; but Faramir and Imrahil remained at Edoras; and Arwen Evenstar remained also, and she said farewell to her brethren. None saw her last meeting with Elrond her father, for they went up into the hills and there spoke long together, and bitter was their parting that should endure beyond the ends of the world.
--RotK, "Many Partings"
A parting beyond the ends of the world. Arwen will never see her father again, nor her brothers, her grandparents, or her entire people, with whom she has spent thousands of years. If I were in that situation, I would stay with them as long as I possibly could. I might even go as far as the Havens to bid them farewell. I would definitely go as far as Isengard. But Arwen chooses to rest at Edoras while her husband escorts her only family and friends away from her, forever. Arwen's coldness in this passage struck me the first time I read LotR, and it has every time I read it afterwards.
She stood alone by his bed. And for all her wisdom and lineage she could not forbear to plead with him to stay yet for a while. She was not yet weary of her days, and thus she tasted the bitterness of the mortality that she had taken upon her.
--Appendix
Nowhere during Aragorn's death scene does Arwen ask Aragorn to stay because she loves him. She asks him to stay because she doesn't want to die. When her husband lies dying, she doesn't think of him, but of her own approaching death. In fact, Aragorn's death scene is spent comforting Arwen! Rather than mourning him, she mourns her own mortal life.
And yet, after Aragorn dies, Arwen does not choose to remain with her children, ending the rest of her days in comfort in their company - simply being with her family and friends in Minas Tirith. Instead:
It seemed to her people that she had become cold and grey as nightfall in winter that comes without a star. Then she said farewell to Eldarion, and to her daughters, and to all whom she had loved; and she went out from the city of Minas Tirith and passed away to the land of Lorien.
--Appendix
Arwen's death alone in Lothlorien is sad, yes, and Tolkien wrote it beautifully. But why does she leave her family and loved ones and choose to die alone? She has so much to keep living for! One has to wonder, if their children are of age, if Arwen ever saw her grandchildren. Honestly, how would you feel if your father died, then your mother told you, "Sorry, kiddo. Your father was my only reason for living. See ya!"
People often say that Arwen is a symbol of hope; many comment on how strong her hope is. And I agree with that, to some extent. So it is rather ironic that Arwen leaves her home and family and dies in an act of utter despair.
Sodala!
